Jelly Beans spring us into the new season!

We cover a lot of vintage monsters on Cereal Creatures, but as we approach the Easter and spring seasons, we decided to do something fun: taste test a few of the seasonal jelly beans, certainly a vintage sugary snack that dates back many decades.

For our highly-scientific taste test we just grabbed the following from a couple local stores.

  • Fruity Pebbles Jelly Beans from Dollar Tree.

  • Claussen Pickle Flavor Jelly Beans. I don't recall where I got these, but it was either Dollar Tree or Five Below.

  • Dunkin Refreshers Jelly Beans from Five Below.

  • Orange Creamsicle Jelly Beans from Five Below.

The Fruity Pebbles come in the same rainbow of colors as the Post cereal of the same name. The jelly beans themselves have a taste that mirrors the cereal, but their downfall comes in the actual eating of the beans. They're tough and overly chewy. Maybe they were leftover from last year, but these were good flavored, but not a great experience.

The Claussen Pickle Flavor Jelly Beans were next up. I admit, I lamented when I'd see "pickle jelly beans" only to discover they were green apple flavored. When I saw these, I had high hopes. Unfortunately, those hopes vanished when I tried one. They have a slight hint of pepper taste, then sweet with a little bit of dill. They're not awful by any means, but they don't have much of a dill pickle taste either.

Last year I tasted Dunkin's latte flavored jelly beans, which I believe also made a come back this year. Avoid those, but their Dunkin Refreshers Jelly Beans are actually pretty good. They come in lemonade, peach passion, strawberry dragonfruit and raspberry watermelon. The lemonade is the winner by far. They could be a little more tart and a little less sweet, but they're okay for jelly beans.

The Orange Creamsicle Jelly Beans from Good Humor were our least favorite. They had very little orange taste and an medicine-y aftertaste. I'll plan on avoiding these. Ironically, the orange creamsicle should've been the more vintage option, but it didn't live up to this reviewer's expectation.

I'm sure there are many other brands of jelly beans available. Though we rarely eat the bean, our go-to brand is Jelly Belly. If you're a fan, give these options a try this spring!
